Digging Dirt

Red wigglers...

Yes, that's how I started this morning.

I was in search of slimy, icky, awesome red wigglers. These suckers love vegetables like this fluffy girl loves cake...and they'd probably eat that, too.

It all started with this video:

So, of course, I had to go in search of some.

I've been trying for years to have a go at composting. Usually, I fail because I get distracted, overwhelmed, or I'm just not around. Invariably, I end up with a pile of goo that end up (wait for it...) throwing away. All I did was make my mess messier.

However, I've learned recently about how many gobs and gobs of food we Americans throw away (which is another issue) but we don't do anything with it. It just gets chucked along with all Groupon crap we bought when we were sleeping buying...  Yes, it's a thing...
Anyway, now we have nearly two acres and no HOA, so we're starting an urban farm. And red wigglers, they're just the start of it.

You've got to love these guys.

Once they are purchased, I'll be hunting down my drill and a couple of storage bins. Then everyone will be scared.

EXTRAS:
A couple of things I'm doing in addition to our vegetable waste are:

  1. Collecting coffee grounds from work
At my office, they provide coffee in two way - a single serving machine and a large serving machine. The single serving is a little harder to get anything truly useful. However, the large serving machine accounts for a 5 gallon paint bucket's worth of grounds every 3 days. That'll keep my worms busy.
  2. Collecting vegetable scraps from work.
Here, lunch is brought in my a catering service. With a healthful salad bar available, green scraps are easy to find. The storage bin I leave fills up in only a day or two. I really have to keep and eye on it, too. It can get away from me super quick.

Red wigglers...FedEx is gonna love me...

P.S. Where to find red wigglers - online, there are several vendors. You can also check the bait section in Wal-mart.
